Indigenous Institutional Investors in Canada: Advancement, Education and Opportunity
Part one of “CIBC Mellon Industry Perspectives: Indigenous Institutional Investors in Canada: Advancement, Education and Opportunity” podcast series explores opportunities for non-Indigenous institutional investors to incorporate and engage with Indigenous perspectives informed by the principles of Truth and Reconciliation. Recommendation 92 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) report asks the corporate sector and its leadership to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
CIBC Mellon hosted an event featuring senior Indigenous market stakeholders and non-Indigenous institutional investors. The event featured three experts, Mark Sevestre, Senior Advisor and Founding Member of the National Aboriginal Trust Officers Association, Jaimie Lickers, Vice President, CIBC Indigenous Markets, and Andrew Hoffman Vice President, Portfolio Manager at Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel.
The discussion was centred around learning, engagement and opportunity exploration with a specific focus on Indigenous institutions in Canada. In this episode, Trish Roberts, Relationship Management and Segment Lead, Indigenous Markets, CIBC Mellon and Lavina Yip, Relationship Manager, CIBC Mellon review some of the highlights from the discussion, and the implications for non-Indigenous investors looking to learn more about how they too can better incorporate and engage with Indigenous perspectives and stakeholders.

BNY Mellon Reports First Quarter Earnings
BNY Mellon reported its first quarter 2022 earnings on April 18, 2022. For more information, view the earnings release.
Bank of Canada Interest Rate Announcement and Monetary Policy Report
On April 13, 2022, the Bank of Canada (BoC) increased its target for the overnight rate to 1 per cent, and it released its latest Monetary Policy Report (MPR) at that time.
According to the BoC, the war in Ukraine is disrupting the global recovery, just as most economies are emerging from the impact of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
In Canada, the BoC states that growth is strong and the economy is moving into excess demand. Labour markets are tight, and wage growth is back to its pre-pandemic pace and rising.
The next scheduled date for announcing the overnight rate target is June 1, 2022. The Bank will publish its next full outlook for the economy and inflation, including risks to the projection, in the MPR on July 13, 2022.

Update on the Implementation of a New Self-Regulatory Organization
The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA) recently issued a notice stating that work is progressing well and timing is on track for a completion date of December 31, 2022.
