Canada Post proposes postage rate changes for 2010

Canada Post has advised that effective Jan. 11, 2010, changes to basic postage rates have been proposed (subject to regulatory approval), which include:

Postage type

Rate on Jan. 11, 2010 (CAD)

Current rate (CAD)

Domestic Lettermail (up to 30 grams)

$0.57

$0.54

U.S. Lettermail (up to 30 grams)

$1.00

$0.98

International Lettermail (up to 30 grams)

$1.70

$1.65

According to Canada Post, these proposed rate increases reflect a multi-year initiative to ensure the corporation can continue to meet its service obligations, provide customers with the assurance of transparent and predictable rates, and address financial pressures arising from declining mail volumes.  Canada Post explicitly states that the corporation will apply a further two cent increase in the domestic letter rate for each year, beginning in 2011 to 2014.

Additional charges for larger and heavier mailings are also proposed, a complete review of which may be found at Canada Post’s Overview of Changes webpage.  This webpage also contains other service changes Canada Post is proposing for 2010 and beyond.

In addition, Canada Post has announced new weight bands for all Lettermail packages between 200 and 500 grams (typically the sorts of packages required for annual meetings and corporate actions).  Whereas previously all packages between these weights were priced identically at C$2.75, Canada Post will be introducing weight banded rates as follows:

  • For 200 to 300 grams: mailing rate will remain at C$2.75
  • For 300 to 400 grams: mailing rate will increase to C$3.00
  • For 400 to 500 grams: mailing rate will increase to C$3.25
