Alberta's abandoned property meter starts running soon
Alberta's Unclaimed Personal Property and Vested Property Act will be in force effective Sept. 1, 2008. For those issuers who fall within the act, this means that the abandoned property meter starts running this fall, with remittance of the property to the minister being required five years later.
SEC amendment permits electronic shareholder forums
Earlier this year, the SEC amended its proxy rules to permit the use of electronic shareholder forums. Investors can use these forums to communicate among themselves and with the companies in which they own shares.
Coming soon - interactive online financial reporting data
The SEC has announced its intention to introduce rules requiring companies to make financial statement information accessible and easily available to investors by the end of 2011. The rules permit companies to provide their financial statements to the SEC and post them on their corporate websites in interactive data format using XBRL.
Fewer restrictions imposed by CSA
The CSA has relaxed the rules relating to proxy solicitation by individuals or groups other than the reporting issuer and its agents. Dissident shareholders may now solicit proxies, without the requirement of an information circular being issued, if the solicitation is made to the public by broadcast, speech or publication.
