CIBC Mellon volunteers plant a seed for tomorrow with Evergreen [Video]
Executives, summer students and other employees take advantage of paid time off for volunteering to lend support at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto
TORONTO, August 21, 2013 – More than 20 CIBC Mellon employees rolled up their sleeves for a day of outdoor volunteering with Evergreen, a national charity dedicated to making Canadian cities more livable. Through CIBC Mellon’s formal "Together in Action" volunteering program, a group of executives, summer students and other employees spent time at Evergreen’s Toronto Brick Works location planting flowers as well as cleaning and restoring the area. The event is one of nearly 50 CIBC Mellon volunteering activities held in or planned for 2013.
“Evergreen has a fantastic partnership with CIBC Mellon – the company and its employees have supported us for many years both financially and as volunteers,” said Joel Longland, development officer, Evergreen. “CIBC Mellon employees are passionate, engaged and very supportive – whenever I attend their events, employees often tell me about their great volunteering experiences here at the Brick Works or about how much they appreciate our efforts to help Canadians imagine their cities with nature.”
“People at CIBC Mellon care about their work, each other, and our communities," said Sue Simone, senior vice president, human resources and corporate communications. "I am extremely proud of how employees across CIBC Mellon have taken advantage of opportunities for paid time off to volunteer as teams with great charities like Evergreen. Employees have told us they value working at a company that gives back – so that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
"I really love CIBC Mellon's commitment to social responsibility,” said Molly Hanson, one of CIBC Mellon's summer students. “Employees here are really passionate about volunteering, fundraising and making a positive difference for the communities where we live and work. It's great to see a company that provides so much support and encouragement to help their employees give back.”
In 2012, 385 employees took advantage of the company’s “Together In Action” Volunteering program, which provides paid time off during regular working hours for employees to volunteer in teams with registered charities. CIBC Mellon also provides grants of up to $1,500 to employees who volunteer 40 or more hours with a non-profit organization. CIBC Mellon was recognized last year as one of the Achievers™ 50 Most Engaged Workplaces in Canada.
